The program begins at 12:30 pm. and features Maria Krenek, who with her husband Tom, owns and operates Glenmar Heather Nursery in Bayside. Heaths and heathers are ideal plants for our area. They have a wide range of foliage colors (with seasonal changes in color), are long-lived, require low maintenance and have low water needs.

Krenek will discuss how to prepare the soil, fertilize and prune these plants. World-wide there are approximately 700 varieties; Glenmar Nursery has over 600 varieties available to choose from. Visitors and those interested in gardening are invited to attend this meeting, beginning at 11:00 am. Those looking to join a garden club are especially welcome.

This will be the last program until the September 24, 2009 meeting. In June the Club will meet at the Redwood Acres Fair and in August will man the Humboldt District booth at the Humboldt County Fair. There will be no meeting in July.

The Eureka Sequoia Garden Club, founded in 1967, is a member of the California Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Humboldt District, California Garden Clubs, Inc. Our Goals are to create and promote interest in horticulture gardening and floral and landscape design; to encourage and engage in civic beautification and the improvement of roadsides; to aid in protecting California’s native plants, wildlife and natural beauty; and to promote, and participate in, projects and programs that conserve our natural resources.

Meetings are held the Fourth Thursday of each month at the Christ Episcopal Church, in Lewis Hall, H and 15th Streets, Eureka, at 11 a.m. For more information on the Eureka Sequoia Garden Club, its activities and monthly
program, contact President Sue Moran at 269-7112.
