I often get the bulbs this time of year along with a small piece of pottery and a 4” annual, and pot up a small hostess gift. For about $10 you can get a small terra cotta pot, 10 crocus, Iris reticulata, or mini Daffodils (oh heavens, we’re all supposed to start calling them Narcissus now, right?), and a couple annuals – pot them up and tie a ribbon around it for a great homemade gift.
Make sure you tell non-gardeners what to expect – that the bulbs will emerge in a few months, and that the annual flower will die and it isn’t their fault (!), then after the bulbs finish blooming they can plant the lot in their garden in sun and forget about it till they bloom next year.
