I SWEAR I'm not making this up. DH decided to rake up leaves for the first time this fall, and there's more than we need for composting or will fit in recycling, so he used the mower to mulch them down. I was debating whether to have him leave a thin layer on my plants (which are perennials in composted soil with mulch on top) and your post answered the question. In fact, I think I'll forward this to him.

Now you know I wasn't kidding when I told you I'm a so-so gardener!

Monica, I curbside shop for extra leaves too, but I compost them before turning them into the soil! :) I take it you use the leaves as mulch, or else apply fresh chip mulch in spring after you turn it into the beds?

Again, so interesting the different climates... here where it freezes over winter, a thick layer of leaves is awesome on beds... by spring it's kind of squishy and can be turned into the soil as amendment. I also shred some leaves and put them in my compost bins. I even curbside shop for more leaves because I don't get enough! :)
