50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants

EDIT: Patrick is the winner of the giveaway!

You all remember my excitement recently to have discovered this lovely new book from Timber Press.

Ruth Rogers Clausen shows off 50 top picks for deer-resistant gardens, and gives about two pages of in-depth information about how to design with each plant, what other plants look best with it, and generally how to make a great big success of your deer-resistant garden, even if you’re a beginning gardener.

I also loved the big juicy photos of every single plant in the book. It made envisioning her design suggestions so much easier, to see an example of the plant used in the garden.

If you want to read more about the book, I’ve profiled it here for the Christian Science Monitor, and also reviewed it here on Amazon. Suffice it to say, if you’re struggling with selecting plants the deer won’t eat, this is a friendly primer that makes gardening with deer hard to screw up.

Want to win your very own copy? Timber Press is offering one up to one lucky US reader.

Just leave a comment below, and I’ll randomly choose a winner on Wednesday August 31st at noon Pacific time. Good luck!

Congrats to Patrick, our lucky winner!

  1. As deer have recently discovered my yard, I have to change how I plant- and this book looks to be a great guide!

  2. Recently started venturing into gardening in deer territory for the first time! In SF this has not been an issue for me. 🙂 What a great book to have!

  3. I hope this book covers plants that can shoot live bees in the face of deer. I’m pretty sure that exists.

  4. Yikes! This couldn’t have been mentioned at a better time. My husband and I had just decided last weekend to give up and let the deer have their way with our front yard, especially since we are dealing now with multiple deer families in our yard. Please pick us we really need the know-how and expertise that we lure us back to gardening!

  5. I would ‘deerly’ love to see this book. I have resident deer that browse through my garden so much there are trails where they walk. I have attempted to plant things they dislike, but, if they are hungry enough….
I have a huge fennel growing in my front garden which is now in bloom. Quite an attractive plant, fantastical draping fronds with yellow blooms. The deer are now coming up my front steps to nibble on this delicacy!
They sneer at me; I need help!

  6. I just moved up to the Santa Cruz Mountains and am planning great things for this yard of mine up here. These deer are really a trip though. They ate a bunch of stuff yesterday and my dog didn’t even NOTICE THEM! I’m just a beginner in dealing with deer, we have a Mom and 2 babies that cruise around our property and they are beautiful. I have a garden in a community plot in Santa Cruz and animals (besides snails) haven’t been an issue for me before. This book would help me plan what I’m going to do to beautify my surroundings.

  7. The deer just feasted on one of my tomato plants, eating it down to the cage. Also, they noshed on a few of the sugar snap tendrils that had escaped from the mesh. Bleerg!

  8. This year we had to put fencing around the vegetable garden. Last year the deer found the beans. This year the found the strawberries. Guess what were doing next year?

  9. We live on the edge of a forest, and have no fence, so the deer frequent our yard here in the Piney Woods of east Texas. I’ve got my roses in cages, and have watched the deer decimate many of our plants. This looks like a book I desperately need!

  10. I think this book will turn into a classic for those challenged by deer which are a lot of people. I hope it’s very successful.

  11. My mom’s husand would love this book! He’s constantly complaining about the deer.

  12. I’m afraid the problem with deer is just as bad here on this side of ‘the pond’ – in the Mendip Hills, about 100 miles southwest of London, England.

We have a family of 3 deer that are often seen casually grazing in our garden. I wish they weren’t such beautiful creatures to look at! I’m always on the look-out for good recommendations of deer-resistant plants.

  13. Very cooll. We just moved to a new location which has deer lounging on yards rather than dogs! I need a book like this!
